She was a designer, singer and performer who broke through the barriers of the music industry. She was Mexican-American, but still traditional. She introduced Tejano into the mainstream of music. The same way many people mourn a star who died too young, her death was untimely and shattered a growing career. Through the years, her fans were inspired to work even harder in order to ensure that her achievements would not be forgotten. The tragic shooting death of Tejano singer Selena caused a resurgence in the Latino community that could be compared to the reactions in the wake of the deaths of Elvis Presley and John Lennon. Selena was a hugely loved singer by Latinos throughout North America. But her songs touched the hearts of both young and the old. An edgy, sexy stage actress often referred to as Selena the Latina Madonna Selena was nonetheless considered a role model for Off-stage, she was also a family oriented active in anti-drug campaigns as well as AIDS awareness campaigns.
